If your planning to join the army of frocked up and fabulous women who flock to the races each year, here are my tips to ensure you arrive looking races ready.
PREPARATION:
Scrub a dub dub – very important to slough away the winter build up of dead skin from anywhere that may be exposed in your frock.
Treat you feet – if you can’t afford a pedicure, grab the cheese grater (or something more appropriate) and give your feet a regular going over in order to look more like a princess and less like Shrek in your party shoes.
Shave, wax or pluck to within an inch of your life!
Start drinking water and eating well at least one month before (and leading up to) your first event – this will ensure your skin looks healthy. Unfortunately there is no flattering lighting at the races, unless you go stand in the back of a stable.
Start practicing your race day accent dhaaaarling.
THE FROCK:
Stop sighing – shopping should be fun! Anyway, choose which fashion group you fit into and read on …
The Classic
How about an elegant a-line or full skirt in a soft delicate fabric and pattern teamed with a highly structured jacket in a contrasting colour to the skirt. Top with a structured hat in a complimentary colour (not black). Fabulous dhaarling!
The Fashion Savvy
Seek out such brands as Willow, Lisa Ho, Camilla & Marc, Yeojin Bae etc. My favorite collection for this racing season – as the frocks are just so damn good – is THURLEY. www.thurley.com.au
If this is too $$$$, try www.indiangiver.com.au where you can hire the latest designer look for next to nix.
MYL designer clearance is another great haunt to find unique pieces at great prices. www.myl.com.au
Don’t be afraid to spice up your outfit with some outrageous accessories.
Another option is to go simple and classic with the outfit and turn up the amp on the hat and the shoes. A simple shift can be easily transformed with a knock out pair of shoes and over the top hat.
The Alternate
Ditch the dress and go for a short jumpsuit with socks and chunky shoes. No fascinator for you my little anti-fashion devil, you need something weird and wonderful like an old nanna hat or coloured tennis peak.
Alternatively, hit the vintage stores and find a rockin’ 80’s taffeta number and sing waa waa nee all the way home.
The Hat
Headwear needn’t cost the earth – there are plenty of stores (such as Spotlight, Lincraft, Cleggs etc) who sell all the things you need to make your own. Just be careful not to hot glue gun your ear to your elbow.

Final Race Day Tips:
- Be individual!
- If it’s only 16 degrees, wear a jacket. Goose bumps don’t look good on anyone.
- Don’t take your shoes off!! - unless you are catching the train straight back to [insert insulting suburb of your choice here].
