Menswear Madness

As you may know, the autumn/winter menswear runway shows kicked off in Milan earlier this month.  Unlike womens wear which clearly has no boundaries, (just watch a Viktor & Rolf show for example), menswear is a little more restricted by traditional values and what consumers expect to see men wearing.  This is why you've gotta love Vivienne Westwood.

I get he distinct impression that Vivienne Westwood does not take herself or the fashion industry very seriously.  Her collections are always fun to the point of being outrageous and shocking.  Her latest menswear collection shown in Milan had a touch of Vagrant chic about it, that reminded me of another line of vagrant inspired fashion from the movie Zoolander.

Who can forget this great quote by fashion designer Mugatu (played by Will Ferrell).
"Let me show you Derelicte. It is a fashion, a way of life inspired by the very homeless, the vagrants, the crack whores that make this wonderful city so unique".

By the way, if you haven't seen Zoolander, 1. what is wrong with you, and 2. go watch it NOW!

Anyway, here's a sample of some of the Vivienne Westwood collection.  I loved that her models were not all young skinny manchilds, and I absolutely love that she always portrays a subtle message within her collections, such as homelessness and climate change as per this collection.  Which other designer could incorporate fireman pants or a shopping trolley on the runway!

Mixed in with her vagrant chic, was some sheer brilliance in modern male dressing.  No one does a man in a skirt quite like Vivienne Westwood!

Whether you like her style or not, you have to agree the Vivienne Westwood is one in a million and has had an enormous influence on pop culture fashion.
I cannot wait to see her ready to wear womens collection due to roll down the runway in February.
