The Magic Fashion Merry-Go-Round

Fashion as we know is ever changing, yet in some weird comforting way it remains the same.

Fashion will always reference the past, it has to,  I mean how many new ways can your really come up with for a dress?   Regardless of the embellishments, and design elements, dresses will always be some kind of tube design with openings for your head, arms and legs.  So it's only natural that what goes around comes around ... eventually.

I certainly don't want to encourage hoarding, but there are certain fashion trends that loop around again and again ... so if you invest in the trend, it is worth hanging onto pieces ready for the next loop.

Military
This season I have re-worn all my military jackets, dresses and coats from years gone by.  Military inspired pieces are usually structured in design and therefore can be worn again and again.  Although military fashion can be in many colours, keep items in khaki, olive, navy and taupe shades.

Bohemian
The 70's was such a fashion turning point that the overall bohemian hippy style will sway back and forth into fashion like the melodic beat of a Fleetwood Mac song.  Items to keep may include a faux fur vest, a fringed bag, long chunky beads and clogs.
Ethnic
Each time the Ethnic trend comes around again, the prints have usually been updated, therefore the easiest way to jump on this trend next time it comes around is to hang on to any jewellery pieces -  wooden, craft, hammer finish, beaded, tribal etc.

Biker / Rocker
Hang onto items with hardware such as studs and buckles.  Black is a popular colour for this look, and we all know you have plenty of that in your wardrobe!   Much of this look comes from hair, make-up and attitude, so practice your Billy Idol snarl for next time.
Asymmetric
This trend has been in for a while now and will always rear it's pretty little, slightly tilted, head for decades to come.  Asymmetric in fashion simply means one side does not equal the other, however most of us associate asymmetry to one shouldered items.  Evening wear are the best pieces to hang on to as they are less likely to date.
Preppy
This look that can be worn anytime, especially if you are after a simple, understated elegance.  Many women from certain suburbs around the bay wear this look 24/7.  You know the ones, chino's, plain sand shoes, crisp white shirt with collar up, light knit, pearl earrings and necklace and of course the bob haircut.  This look can be updated by simply pulling the collar firmly down, ditching the pearls, adding a cool monogram blazer, and swapping the sand shoes for lace up brogues and bobby socks.

Other things to keep (because they will definitely come around again)!

  1. Bags
  2. Belts
  3. Accessories

If by the time a certain trend comes around again and you no longer feel that the trend is appropriate, then the pieces you have held onto can be given to friends / relatives or sold on eBay for a tidy sum!

PS:  If you don't want to sound like a grandma in the fashion stakes, avoid saying things like ...

"I remember having one of those"
"I used to wear that roller skating"
"I wore a dress just like that the day of the moon landing"
"Excuse me dear, you seem to have left your pants at home"

Remember  -  when you were at the top of the fashion pile, there were plenty of older folk who were tut-tutting at how they used to wear something very similar back in their day!

All aboard the Magic Fashion Merry-Go-Round!
