Elections Are Good For You

I've worked in the retail industry for over 20 years a very long time, and without fail, as soon as there is a sniff of an election, consumers put their money back in their wallets, zip them up, place them under a cushion, pile on some bricks, rocks and general create type constructions, wrap it in safety tape, adorn with witches hats and nail a very strong sign atop which reads  "Keep Out. Nothing to see here, just a big old pile of rubbish.  Move along".

What this means in real terms is that retail sales will hit the brakes *insert squealing wheel sound here*.    Retail is a reactive business.  In boardrooms all across Australia this week, groups of executives will wheel in the giant comic panic button and collectively hit it.  They will come up with ingenious and proactive ways to entice you to spend your money with them.

Why is this good for you?  Because if you play your cards right, you can grab yourself some good old fashioned bargains.

Rules of thumb for the weeks ahead:
  1. Don't buy anything full price
  2. Subscribe to your favourite store's email newsletter to keep in touch with any special offers
Happy pre-election shopping!
