Autumn-y Goodness

How about some autumn-y goodness to brighten your weekend?

Oh shoosh, I know it's still summer, but the stores are already stocking their first drop of the new season, so we best accept that we need to start thinking about what we're going to wear in the coming months.  (Apologies if I just sounded like your Mother)!

I adore autumn.  It is by far my favourite season.  I love how crisp the air becomes in the morning.  I love the change in the trees.  I love baking warm tasty treats.  I love reading mags in cozy Melbourne cafe's.  But most of all, I love the FASHION!  (Quite frankly, I think that's why they make autumn / winter fashion so addictive, to stop us pining for summer)!

Prepare your senses, because we are about to embark on a 'fall fashion week wonderland'.
New York Fashion week kicks off on 10th February (see dates of all shows listed to the left), and although 'technically' we will not see the trends that emerge filter through to Australia until 2012, we can certainly steal some inspiration and style tips right from the runway.

I'll be keeping you up to date with my favourite looks as the each fashion week progresses, so be sure you come back regularly, or better still subscribe to my blog to receive all the latest info right into your inbox.  Wow, first I sounded like your Mother, now I've turned into an infomercial!

One of the hot to trot items this coming season is FAUX FUR.
You know, I didn't think I could wear faux fur given how much I despise real fur and animal prints, but I bought my first faux fur gillet last winter at an opp shop for $6 and now I am hooked!

Here's a selection of what's available right now.   If you don't want to faux yourself from head to toe, you can dabble with this trend in the way of gloves, shoes, scarves or even a slouchy bag.

  7. Sportsgirl Splice Cable Faux Fur Vest
  8. Top Shop Faux Fur Slouch Bag

I just made myself some luxe faux fur cushion covers with fabric purchased from The Fabric Store in Fitzroy.  It's around $60 a meter, but totally worth it.  I bought enough to make lots of other things too ... watch this space.

So come on, be a Faux-ny just like me!

Be a Lady

To stay on the nostalgia theme, one of the big trends you will see in the stores and magazines this coming season has been dubbed 'ladylike'.

This trend takes it's inspiration from the 50's & 60's fashion era where women dressed very neat, tidy and well ... ladylike.  And we can thank the popular show Mad Men for this fashion influence.

Do you watch Mad Men?  I watched it recently to see what all they hype was about.  I think I like the sets and the fashion more than the show if I'm honest.    Regardless of my viewing taste, it is fantastic to see normal sized and sexy women on television (especially Christina Hendricks).

To draw inspiration for this ladylike trend, you can go no further than some old sewing patterns from the early 60's.

If you sew, Vogue have some great vintage patterns that will be fun to make and get you right in amongst this trend.  If not, then watch the stores which will be brimming with options very soon.
You can choose to take this trend literally, or as I like to, spin it with your own personal style.  Either way, we are in for a well dressed autumn.

If you are a fan of Mad Men, you may like to make a 60's avatar of yourself like I did here.
