I love flipping through magazines and being inspired by the innovative styling, sets, photography and fantasising how each outfit would make a beautifully addition to my wardrobe.
I am also a realist and completely aware that the beautiful musicians, actors and models, whilst showcasing the epitome of youth, have been re-worked and re-touched within an inch of their lives!
I'm OK with that. I do not look at advertising or editorial an assume what I am seeing is the truth. Instead, I look at each image as a work of art .. including the digital artist who has removed, smoothed, cropped, slimmed, elongated, coloured and 'perfected' the image to give us the idealistic and unrealistic image that we see on the page.
Sure, I would love this hideous practice to stop and for us to see real people in magazines, but there is far too much advertising money involved for the practice to cease, so rather than get my secretly feminist sensible underwear in a twist, I choose to see the images for what they really are and stay focused on my reality rather than some one else's ideal.
So re-touch away my shallow little friends. You do not fool me nor do I buy into the insanely perfect images you portray. I also think twice about parting with my hard earned cash on brands that use unrealistic images to promote their products.
Want to know more? Do a Google search for 're-touched images' or click on this link and be truly horrified at what you find!
Then take yourself off to your mirror and be thankful and happy that you look the way you do - because the reflection you are seeing is REAL.
