It's not just the cafes, fashion and vintage stores that I find appealing, the street has a vibe, a soul, a community spirit that is very appealing.
I'm not the only one with a passion for the street and the area. Monique McNamara and Kym Ortenburg founded the Gertrude Association in 2007 to facilitate their commitment to produce sustainable community art projects.
Since 2008, The Gertrude Association has produced the delightful projection festival where artists and community groups create a range of works that are projected in and on the wonderful buildings along Gertrude Street.
This year's theme is {Hidden}: Places & Spaces reflects the hidden history and stories of Gertrude street.
I attended the festival on the opening night. After a tasty dinner on Smith Street, we strolled casually along Gertrude Street from one end to the other. A quick stop at the Gertrude Street Enoteca for a drink (love love love the staff there) added to the enjoyment of the evening.
You don't have to know anything about art to enjoy the festival. The visuals and atmosphere are stimulating and satisfying. Should you wish to know more, friendly volunteers are walking the festival handing out fliers that detail the artists and the works.
If you have time between now and Sunday, I can highly recommend spending a brisk Melbourne evening wandering a truly lovely street in Fitzroy. **Take your coat!
