Whenever a fashion trend references a previous one - and let's face it, every trend is referenced from past fashions - the important thing is to make the look modern and make the look work for you and your body shape.
Because most of the world was still at war during the first half of the 1940's, much of the fashion was very understated, sleek, tailored and military inspired. Fabric, like so many other comodities was in short supply, so flamboyance gave way to the practical with some iconic results. The 1940's saw the birth of the pencil skirt, shoulder pads, shirt dresses and the modern 'suit'.
Women also started wearing mens coats during the 40's while their men were away at war, as the opportnity for a new coat was not always available or affordable. This is why trench coats and oversized, structured shouldered coats came into fashion for women.
If you want to jump on board with this fashion trend, you have two options - you can either go all out vintage with original pieces sourced from vintage stores or OP shops, or go completely modern with a hint of 40's reference ...
