Buy Nothing New

I could be cutting my nose off to spite my face given that I shop for a living, however I have taken the 'Buy Nothing New' pledge for the month of October.  Gulp.

I will try my utmost to think about consumption and assess what I really need as opposed to what I want, which in my case is always a pretty big list.

I've always had a little trouble making big purchases.  Not that I am overly frugal, it's just that I cannot justify carrying a $5,000 handbag while there are people in this world, and in fact this town, that cannot afford to eat three meals a day.

I already love to buy second hand, and make some of my clothes, so how hard can this challenge be right?  Says she who is already nervous that 'the' shoes, you know that ones you have dreamed of in your head all your life that haven't been made yet, will suddenly become available in October for a limited time and you won't be able to buy them.  What have I done!

It'll be fun!  I'm sure it will be fun.  Will it be fun?

Here's how I plan to Buy Nothing New:

  • Raid my family's wardrobes for items I can have or borrow.  Since my sister and mother are uber skinny, looks like I'll be rocking androgyny from the boy's wardrobes!
  • Finally make some clothing from fabric I already own from my bulging fabric cupboard.
  • Clean out my wardrobe and donate items to my local OP shops so others can buy nothing new.
  • Darn a sock.  I have no idea how as yet, but they are always doing it in those period dramas so it can't be that hard.
  • Have fun scouring the city's OP shops and having some lovely chats with the Nanna's who work there.

I'll be blogging about my progress during the month of October.  Wish me luck!

I already shop with many clients in second hand stores and OP shops, so if you have taken the pledge, want to buy nothing new and go shopping, check out my services via my website.

Here's an idea ...  take the pledge with me!  Click here to take the pledge.

  1. I love that you're doing this! I don't see why people need to spend tonnes of money just to look and thus, feel good. The most expensive clothing item I own cost me $80 and even that was a massive splurge for me but since this good quality trench coat has lasted years, and has a good few years left, it was well worth it! Even my Year 12 ball dress cost less than that and no one could tell!
